Corrections Education

Mission: To offer quality learning opportunities, in a safe environment, that provide support and resources via career pathways for incarcerated learners to achieve their educational and employment goals therefore making a positive societal impact.
Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA): Title II- Adult Education and Literacy, Subtitle B-State Provisions, Sec. 225 of WIOA governs programs for corrections education individuals via funds made available under section 222(a)(1) each fiscal year.
Incarcerated individuals are served on all levels: federal, state, and local. These services include adult education and literacy activities; special education, as determined by the eligible agency; career pathways; transition to re-entry initiatives and other post-release services with the goal of reducing recidivism. Programs may also provide integrated education and training; concurrent enrollment; and peer tutoring. Eligible programs across the state of SC may offer different services based on the incarcerated individuals’ needs and institution and facility allowances. Per legislation, priority enrollment is given to individuals who are likely to be released within 5 years of program participation.
Partnerships are highly encouraged. Providing, facilitating, and delivering quality services to incarcerated individuals is a complex task due to the restrictions enforced by institutions and facilities. Building and maintaining healthy relationships with core and community partners increase the opportunities available to these individuals both behind and beyond the walls.
